At Vitamin Enriched, we cast professional actors and real people for commercials and advertising campaigns across the United States. Some projects require a local search, others benefit from targeting several cities, and sometimes the only way to find the right person is to search nationwide.
We’ve been doing this since 2004, and one thing we’ve learned is that a bigger casting search isn’t always a better casting search.
The right approach depends on who you’re looking for, where you’re shooting, your timeline, and your budget.
If you’re shooting a commercial in New York and looking for professional actors with a fairly broad character description, there’s a good chance we can find fantastic talent locally.
The same can be true for real people casting. If we’re looking for everyday New Yorkers, local business owners, or people who reflect a particular community, it makes sense to start in that market.
Local casting can also save production money by avoiding flights, hotels, and additional travel expenses.
Why search the entire country when the right talent may already be in your backyard?
Sometimes the casting brief is much more specific.
Maybe we’re looking for a grandparent and grandchild who genuinely play golf together. Or a small business owner with an unusual story. Or someone with a particular skill, profession, or life experience.
These are the kinds of searches where limiting ourselves to one city can make finding the right person incredibly difficult.
Real people casting often involves finding individuals who aren’t actively looking for commercial opportunities. They’re not represented by agents, and they’re not necessarily checking casting websites.
We find them through research, community outreach, targeted advertising, and good old-fashioned detective work.
When you’re looking for a needle in a haystack, sometimes you need a bigger haystack.
A nationwide search gives us more opportunities to find people who genuinely fit the creative brief rather than compromising because of geography.
Not every project needs to be strictly local or nationwide.
Sometimes it makes sense to search several cities or concentrate on a particular region.
For example, if a commercial is shooting in New York, we might expand the search throughout the Northeast before considering talent farther away.
This can provide a larger pool of candidates while keeping travel costs manageable.
It’s about being strategic, not simply casting the widest net possible.
The geographic scope of casting can affect both the casting budget and production costs.
Nationwide searches may require more extensive outreach, research, and coordination. And if the selected talent lives across the country, production may need to cover travel and accommodations.
But local casting isn’t automatically easier or less expensive.
If you’re looking for someone with an extremely specific background or skill set in a limited area, finding enough qualified candidates can be challenging and time-consuming.
We typically recommend allowing two to three weeks for specialized real people casting searches, although every project is different.
The important thing is to establish a realistic strategy from the beginning.
